From Abandoned Carts to Loyal Customers: AI Chatbot Drives 31% More Sales
Client: UrbanNest Home Goods
The Challenge
Problem Statement
UrbanNest Home Goods, a direct-to-consumer furniture and decor brand doing about $4M in annual revenue, had a healthy traffic problem: plenty of visitors, weak conversion. Site analytics told a consistent story — shoppers abandoned 74% of carts, product pages with unanswered questions (dimensions, materials, shipping times for bulky items) showed the highest exit rates, and the two-person support team was buried under 1,800 monthly tickets, over 40% of which were 'where is my order' inquiries.
Support response times averaged 14 hours, which for a considered purchase like a $900 sofa meant the buying moment had usually passed. The existing abandoned-cart email sequence recovered just 6% of carts. Marketing knew personalization and faster answers would move the numbers, but every tool they'd tried was either a dumb FAQ widget or an enterprise platform priced for companies ten times their size.

Our Solution
Engineering the Answer
We built a catalog-aware AI chatbot deeply integrated with UrbanNest's Shopify store, live inventory, and order management. The bot answers the questions that were killing conversions — exact dimensions, material and care details, delivery windows by zip code, stock availability, returns for oversized items — drawing from live store data rather than static scripts. It checks order status instantly, initiates returns, and escalates to the human team with full context when judgment is needed.
On the revenue side, we rebuilt cart and browse abandonment as conversations. Instead of a generic email blast, the system reaches out via email or SMS, asks what held the shopper back, and actually handles the answer: shipping-cost objections get a threshold nudge, sizing doubts get answered with room-fit guidance, and hesitant shoppers get a save-for-later flow that re-engages when items go on sale or run low on stock. Post-purchase, automated delivery updates and check-ins eliminated the WISMO ticket flood and fed a review-generation sequence timed to delivery satisfaction.

Technical Architecture
System Design
The chatbot runs on a language model layer grounded in a continuously synced knowledge base: the full Shopify catalog with variants and inventory, shipping-rate tables, policy documents, and past support conversations that revealed how customers actually phrase questions. Retrieval grounding keeps every answer traceable to live store data, eliminating hallucinated product claims.
The conversational marketing engine connects Shopify cart and browse events to a decision layer that selects channel, timing, and message per shopper, with frequency caps and suppression rules to keep outreach welcome rather than annoying. Integration with Klaviyo preserved UrbanNest's existing email flows while the AI layer handled two-way conversations. A merchandising dashboard surfaces what shoppers ask for but can't find — which drove three new product line decisions in the first two quarters — and weekly conversation reviews during launch tuned the bot from 54% to 68% ticket deflection.

"The chatbot answers sofa-dimension questions at 1am better than our old FAQ page ever did, and the cart recovery conversations feel like a helpful salesperson, not a nag. We watched recovery go from 6% to 27%, and my support team finally works on problems that deserve a human. Best technology investment we've made."
